Meet the One Behind the Content

Hello! I'm Katrina! I am the one behind the content, all the social media posts, many of the blogs and the website redesign.

When did you start with Cineflair, and what do you do in your role?

I started at Cineflair in October as the Marketing Coordinator. My primary role is to share the work Cineflair’s video team creates so you know what’s going on. I get to pop into shoots, take behind-the-scenes photos, and write creative content for you to read. I recently remodelled the website and am now working on keeping it updated. I’m also often a stand-in when the rest of the team is testing lighting and cameras on set.

I’m here to support Cineflair and truly show off the amazing content we create. As well as help develop our internal marketing and advertisements. I’m hoping to launch some fun events for you to attend coming up soon, so stay tuned.

What was your career journey to get to Cineflair?

After graduating high school, I went into a Bachelor of Science in Math & Economics at the University of Alberta. Soon after I started my program, I realized how much I loved being at University and hated the program. I needed to make a change, but I simply didn’t know what to pick. I tried many different things during my first year, eventually training to get my lifeguarding certification. After finishing my first year, I started to look for lifeguarding positions, ultimately getting hired at a Summer camp on their waterfront team last minute. At first, I was terrified, but I met some amazing people who completely changed my life and got to plan many events, which was so much fun!

During my second year of university, I decided to apply to Business with a Major in Accounting and a Minor in Marketing. Over my third year of university, I worked as a lifeguard part-time while pursuing my love of events as an accounting major. Going to every event I could and talking to so many different people and truly realizing I was finally in the right place, but I still wasn’t doing what I loved. That year I applied to 2 different clubs, and both hired me to plan events for them.

While planning a week-long international student conference in Jasper and the Business Winter Gala, I was asked by a friend to do the marketing for their Student Union campaign for the entire university. She could not understand why I was in accounting but trusted me nonetheless. In January 2020, I finally changed my major to Marketing, and things finally seemed to be going right. While doing the marketing for my friend, I decided to run to be VP Events of the Business Students Association. With some luck (and marketing ;), both of us were elected into our positions. Then, the pandemic hit and my heart broke because I could not hold any events. My fifth year of University was fully online, but finally, in the right major and with time to focus primarily on school, my grades were the highest they had ever been.

I finished my degree in April 2021, began to look for a job, and landed a job at a Local Brewery in Edmonton as an Events Manager. While working there, Nigel and Jesse came in with Cineflair to film the “Best Craft Beer in Edmonton” video for Explore Edmonton. I struck up a conversation with Nigel telling him how I think the industry is exciting and that I like doing photography on the side. He followed up before he left to get my information and passed it on to Amro, who hired me.

What is your most significant piece of advice for those looking to enhance their video production content?

Think about where you want to use your video content and the specific results you want to achieve from your video. Whether, it’s engagement, sales or learning. Without a plan in mind, it will be difficult to shape your video once it’s already complete.

What do you like to do outside of work?

When I’m not working doing weddings and events at a Local Brewery in Edmonton, which takes up a large chunk of my time. I also love to go biking in the summer, go for walks and spend time with friends.

What is your favourite part of your job?

My favourite part of my job is being on set being able to take pictures with the camera and share them. It is so exciting to be able to capture the behind-the-scenes of crazy production days. There is so much excitement buzzing in the air and love feeding off that energy.
